Breakthroughs in the Fight Against Cancer
Southwest Oncology Center was the first radiation therapy facility to introduce TomoTherapy in the Phoenix metropolitan area and we were pioneers in the use of true Image Guided Radiation Therapy. We are proud to say that we are the longest freestanding Radiation Therapy center in the Valley.
We were also the first group in the Valley to introduce the Xoft Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy System and the first center west of the East Coast to use a Large Bore multi-slice CT Scanner to provide better imaging and localization, not only of the tumor, but also of the structures that need to be protected.
Dr. Grado is also a pioneer in the use of interstitial brachytherapy to treat prostate cancer with bi-plane ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance.
Technology is not enough. Having the experience to deliver the treatments is what makes the difference and at Southwest Oncology Centers our doctors have a combined experience of 100 years in Radiation Therapy.
Not Just Another Treatment Clinic in Arizona
Lead by Dr. Gordon L. Grado our team of physicians, nurses, physicists and administrative personnel use a family centered approach in the care of cancer patients. We believe that a combination of experience and the latest technology sets us apart in being able to bring our patients the very best treatments available. Our team approach means that our Radiation Oncologists work closely with the referring physicians to ensure that each patient receives integrated care for their particular cancer.
The Safest, Most Effective Radiation Tools to Fight Cancer
Tomotherapy + 360 Degree Delivery
Conventional machine design allows radiation to be delivered from only a few directions. The TomoTherapy treatment system’s linear accelerator (linac) is mounted to a CT scanner-like ring gantry, which means TomoTherapy treatments can be delivered continuously, from all angles around the patient. More beam directions give our team of Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicist more control in how they plan treatments—and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor. Typically, tens of thousands of beamlets are used in a single TomoTherapy treatment session. Powerful software optimizes the contribution of each one to the total tumor dose, minimizing exposure to healthy tissue.
Prostate Brachytherapy & Seeds
Brachytherapy involves the insertion of tiny radioactive sources or “seeds” directly into the prostate gland giving our team the opportunity to deliver a high dose of radiation to a smaller area in order to have fewer side effects and higher tumor control. Attempts to treat prostate cancer by placing radioactive materials into the prostate date back to the early 20th century. However, the lack of a reliable way to ensure that the radioactive materials were placed in their desired locations limited the use of brachytherapy to treat prostate cancer. That is why Dr. Grado pioneered the use of ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance to place the “seeds” directly into the prostate obtaining great results and few side effects.
Technology Meets Experience
